Herbs in the Bonsai Garden: Natural Pesticide

There are many herbs known to repel insects.  There is no reason why you can’t use them in your bonsai garden!

In fact, the herb Rosemary, even makes wonderful bonsai trees.  I keep pest repelling herbs on my benches and it does help.  And I’ll take any help I can get when it comes to pests.

Don’t get too excited though, and think this is all you need.  I still use systemics, insecticidal soap, and Neem Oil as part of my arsenal.

Did I also mention checking my trees multiple times a day? Obsessive? Maybe…..but  you must check your trees everyday, this is your best defense.

So which herbs keep which bugs away?

Below is a chart by pest to make it easy.  The chart covers some of the most prominent pests we deal with:

Aphids:

  • Chives
  • Dill
  • Fennel (**Also attracts predatory insects, the good guys**)

White Flies:

  • Thyme
  • Southernwood

Spider Mites:

  • Dill
  • Chives
  • Garlic

Thrips:

  • Basil

Borers:

  • Chives
  • Lavender

Some of these and many other herbs also repel mosquitoes, flies, fleas and ticks and many other bugs.  Some will also attract good predatory insects for you too!

Cheers!
